† confession: i was seriously depressed on nye. too many options, too many obligations, and too many expectations made me want to hide in my house and ignore my phone. i almost wanted to be spontaneous and say fuckitall but decided that took way too much effort and the idea of me doing absolutely nothing
weighed on my gut like a cheap mexican dinner. unfortunately i have been unable to
shake that feeling and everything seems so....lame?uneventful?uninteresting?uninspiring? i don't know.

† i did manage to get out of the house for a short period of time which, of course, warranted sequins and 5" heels. thai food, a trip to target and a beer made trudging through the snow almost worth it.

† What is this, a blog post?! Yeah I know, I have been a monumental slacker. First there was Turkey Day then my best friend's bday in TX then finals then Xmas...with everything happening I'm surprised I found the time to get dressed. I just wish I had time to photograph it all. Well, now I'm back and, for the new year, I promise I will dedicate myself more to this sadly neglected blog.

† Gap had a 70% sale and I took full advantage of it by purchasing two sweaters, one of which is this yellow waffle knit and the other being a slight knockoff of Isabel Marant (which will hopefully show up here soon).

† I have experienced some of the strangest reactions in relation to whatever I'm wearing: People have run after me, taken pictures without my permission, given me thumbs up, given me a cookie, and during the latest shenanigans, placed ice packs on my head because I was "too hot." The latter was during a voluntary blood donation delivered via two gyrating mascots and I can honestly admit I have never been more embarrassed.

† A rather simple outfit to haunt random department stores in. Things I was looking for: cute white shelves, linen organizing boxes, storage containers, and dog toys.

† I have been on an anti-fashion tirade for some time now. I still participate, I just hate what it's become. It's so ubiquitous you can't take a break from it and the players are so, well, boring. What happened to charisma and individuality? What happened to wearing something simply because you like it (not because you're guaranteed to be photographed in it)? All I witness is mass consumerism in the name of...what? 15 minutes of fame? The ability to publish really mundane shit in lieu of thousands of fans (typos and incorrect sentence structure and all)? To show off the free crap you got because you sold your soul?

† It's not like these people are heroes; in fact, these people have done jack shit. Especially now with the internet, reality tv shows and endless social networks, it really isn't too difficult to achieve mediocre fame if you have the time and disposable income. Those who have slaved for years and years in order to excel in this industry are the ones to be admired. Not because they buy shit, wear shit and talk about...well...shit, but because they are ambitious and knowledgeable. Admire their smarts and know-how not because they wear things given to them (sometimes on loan!!) to wear in public. The mystery is gone, the glamour and fascination doesn't exist anymore...it has been given away meaningless label by meaningless label into the hands of [some] individuals who could care less.

† This blog doesn't even scratch the surface of who I am. Personal style and fashion history are a hobby of mine, one that I have invested many hours in, but a hobby none-the-less. Something I have loved and cherished and attempted to understand/ I have said before that I would love to do PR/become a stylist/interior designer, however, the degree I will soon hold has absolutely nothing to do with the industry (looks like I am headed for a government job) but that doesn't stop me from having some sort of creative outlet*. I have been stalking style.com before style.com became what it is today, I saw the birth of Nastygal and haunted thrift stores long before I knew they were trendy. Imagine going from some semblance of peace to having to compete with large corporations and head hunters to find a treasured vintage piece...it takes all the fun out of it. And it's moderately overwhelming.

† Apologies for my absence, last week was deplorable. I barely made it through Thursday and by the time Friday rolled around I was so excited for my week to end I passed out as soon as I got home. Then, of course, I came down with a mysterious gastrointestinal bug and was laid out on Sunday. So much for relaxing.

† Anyway, I wore this some day last week to class and realized I dress like a 1st grader. I tried it without the belt but the sweater was too baggy and made me look like a marshmallow with a tiny head. I'm also wearing a whole lotta color here. But somehow it works...at least it does in my head. And I love those shoes. 'Nuff said.

† Mister took me out for a delightful sushi dinner and what did I order? Green tea with a side of green tea icecream. Unconventional as well as delicious! And, because the waitress was perplexed as to why I was eating dessert for dinner, she brought me a bowl of soup and bananas fried in tempura free of charge. I guess being weird pays off...sometimes.

Questions answered:

1.) The tree on the back of the door is a vinyl wall graphic I snagged from Target on sale after the back to school sale ended. I tried to find it online but gave up after perusing through 50 pages however, I'm certain you can find it in the store in the home decor section.
2.) I told my best friend about the blog via text messaging! Funny enough, she actually liked the idea. Here I was all apprehensive over nothing. Pish posh.
3.) I've never done a clothing swap but I usually have piles of things I give away to all of my friends! So if that is what a clothing swap is then I'm open to it!
4.) My real name isn't Alecto (one of the three Furies/Erinyes), but more of a nickname I gave to myself after someone asked who my favorite superhero would be. I have always been a huge fan of Dante's Inferno and anything contradictory so Alecto Amorae (anger/revenge vs. love) became my superhero title. And that, my friends, is the best explanation I can muster as to the inner workings of my brain.

† Notice anything different in the photographs? I apparently couldn't choose between wearing a belt and, well, not wearing one. The silly fashion rule of thou shall take one thing off before leaving the house was [loudly] running on repeat through my brain as I attempted to dress myself. What do we think? Belt or no belt?

† I wore this on Saturday to a small dinner get together in Chinatown where I was an effectually solid 8th wheel, ate a cupcake frosting last (it takes talent, folks), and held an hour long conversation regarding video games with a stranger. The things I do to keep myself entertained.

† I am so excited it is finally cold enough to wear the plaid cape. It is my favorite fall/winter outerwear and I would totally wear it in the spring if it didn't have such a heavy lining. I was honestly surprised how many (positive!) compliments I received including an honest question of,"I love that! What kind of plaid is it?" (<-- there is more than one?). † I wore all this (and my lucky Batman underpants) to a birthday celebration Friday night. I-- well, my fedora-- received a multitude of compliments. One girl said,"Ohmygod! I looove your hat! And your hair! And your shoes! And your skirt! Is that real suede?! Can I tough it?! Ohmygod it's so soft! I could just pet it all night. But then you wouldn't like that would you?! Hahaha! Ohmygod! Where did you get that purse? It's so sparkly! Can I touch it?!? Wahwahwahwahwah (repeat in a Charlie Brown Adult voice)."

† Saturday afternoon proved itself to be as beautiful as a Saturday could ever be. Perfect amounts of breeze versus sunlight drew the Mister and I to a vineyard where we had light lunch fare accompanied by a delightful bottle of meritage (such a perfect day date!).

† I, of course, can never seem to dress myself appropriately for any occasion and thus froze in the shadows. My only choice was to don my old lady car coat (stashed in the back seat-- I honestly don't know why it was in the car) I normally use as a robe which made me look like I was a.) ready to take a nap or b.) just woke up from one.

go-go tiny dancer

† So 5" heels are a bit scandalous to wear on campus but at least the rest of me was covered. I've seen worse outfits paired with said heel height but I will reserve that for another day/post.

† I am tired of it raining which means I am tired of wearing my rainboots and felt it necessary this morning to sassify my outfit- hence the pointy foot apparel of death. However, I toned down the audaciousness of the outfit by adding a prim lace jacket and stripes. A twofer if ever there was one because (if you've noticed) I keep a list on my sidebar of outfits I want to ~~screw up~~ try; so not only do I get to check another mix off the list but I also succeeded in not offending anyone.

† I only have 2.5 holidays I actually enjoy annually; one is my birthday (it counts as a holiday!!!), the second is New Year's Eve (it only counts as .5 because the celebration technically starts after midnight <-- sound logic) and the other is Halloween. I came up with a vague notion of a Halloween costume sometime in June and I finally solidified the details at a raggedy redneck bar after a particularly brutal crossfit session on Monday. The best places for inspiration are often the scariest ones.

† The title of said costume? Hippie Hit n' Run. The last accessory I need are a pair of roller skates. Old school, preferably. You wouldn't believe how difficult those things are to find.

† Now, I'm obviously not going to copy her entire outfit, but I did like the idea of mixing the two prints. To deconstruct: I feel as if one print has to be significantly smaller than the other for order for it all to work; in this case, the stripes of her shirt were smaller than the animal print on her jacket. I, however, decided to reverse it and use larger stripes and a smaller animal print. One day I'll add zebra print. Maybe.

† I had had my bargain eye on these bad boys anticipating the day they would go on sale. Well, that day is here and now I cannot seem to choose a color. My indecisiveness makes me wish there was a way to make slip covers for shoes so one could change the color of their shoe to whatever they wished (I'm sure it would never catch on) without having to purchase 4 different pairs of shoes. Alas, that idea is more than improbable and I have to make a decision.

† I think I have it narrowed down to either the purple, the mustard or the gray/taupe (with gray/taupe being the front-runner). My ridiculously superficial reasoning:

I don't like how the contrast stitching looks on the black.
The mustard/chestnut is almost too yellow. I fear it would clash. But then again, I don't have a shoe in that color.
I adore the purple and think it would make an excellent addition to my fall wardrobe. Especially paired with merlot ankle socks!
Gray is an incredibly versatile shade and can also be spruced up with an adorably bright pair of socks.

† Confession: I have shopped entirely too much in the past few days. I blame it on the changing of the seasons...and peer pressure...sure, that sounds about right. One of the purchases I made was this white dress that I bought from H&M for $20 (down from $50). It has a sleeveless bodice with an empire waist and flow-y chiffon skirt (very prom-like). I loved the skirt, hated the cut but couldn't pass up the price tag sooooo it came home with me. I also got the mustard-colored sweater for $12 and the sweater tights for...$8? Don't quote me on it. I wore this for over 12 hours without a single complaint. Best. Outfit. Ever.

Like the hanger? Yeah, sometimes I'm too lazy to hang them up.

Actual conversation that occurred while wearing this shorts:

Girl: "Hello, Girl Who Wears No Pants."

Me: (laughing at the hypocrisy of the statement as Girl is wearing a skirt.)

Girl: (shocked and offended because I'm not insulted): I don't know why you're laughing, it's seriously skanky.

Me: (still laughing).

Now, would she have said that to a male? I think not, especially because she was speaking nicely to a gentleman a few seconds before she spat her two-cents in my direction. However, because we are both females and for some unbeknownst reason, our gender unites us, I was expected to succumb to such derogatory exclamations and apologize for exposing my slender gams. Apologies for using a cliched idiom but, this lights my fire.

I am not your buddy simply because we share the same reproductive organs. I chose my friends based upon their innate traits- i.e; loyalty, trust, honor, commitment, honesty- not because we're girls. Furthermore I will not even attempt to be friendly with someone who is so irrational. I do not exhibit the stereotypical behavior or an individual that can be labeled a skank and so therefore I view you as a child with the inability to properly express one/s feelings. If you're angry, state it. If you're envious, state it. Do not casually label someone with a gender-associated insult if you yourself are not willing to incur the same.

I do not see race as an issue, I do not see gender as an issue, I do not see sexuality as an issue. Especially because I come from a family (and a society) that can be construed as a medley of the aforementioned. Tolerance is a must, all else is an extreme and should be treated as such. Notice I did not judge her for being of a "Middle Eastern" or "African American" or "Caucasian" decent because there was no need to mention it. Both are merely political constructs meant to over-generalize for political purposes. Skank, on the other-hand, has no purpose. Shame on you, madame, I hope your mother would not approve.

When I was 8 or 9 years old my mother warned me that humanity is awful and being a female in this society was going to be difficult. Then she explained that being a female judged by other females is even worse as we (as women) are supposed to deal with it just to get along. I have never played well with others just for the sake of being liked and I don't see that changing any time soon, mainly because a.) it gets you absolutely nowhere b.) no one will respect you c.) no one will notice you d.) you are replaceable and e.)the "friends" you have will never really be your friends. They will put up with your incessantly negative diatribe simply because we were told in Kindergarten to play along.

I have found that any form of jealousy (whether purposeful or not) is completely useless and will make you ugly (internally and externally). I will not dumb myself down for a woman (or anyone for that matter) who is completely ensconced in gender stereotypes (whether appropriate or not) and cannot be open-minded enough to accept people as they come. So therefore, she judges based upon gender-driven stereotypes and schemas to make herself feel better. Hence how she can vocalize publicly that any girl wearing shorts is therefore skanky while disregarding the female standing behind her wearing a dress so short I thought it was a tunic and the mere fact she was also wearing a pencil skirt (that was far too tight). I think Alanis Morisette wrong a song about this very topic-- it was called,"Ironic".

Which is why I laughed so damn hard.

† One of the definite changes in the summer to fall transitioning is my lipstick color. This one is called Blackberry by Revlon and I haven't stopped wearing it since last Wednesday. I also (finally) perfected the cat-eye- perfect with a darker lipstick.

† I was thinking about changing my hair color, too. Nothing too spectacular, of course, maybe lightening the tips or adding more red highlights? Not sure yet...

† Even though, by June, I already planned my costume, I totally forgot about Halloween! My wakeup call was seeing all the gigantic bags of candy in CVS. Now, I never eat candy but twice a year- Easter and Halloween. Actually, I usually eat it for one week only so that, come the holiday, I'm completely sick of it and won't have the appetite for it. Hence my gorging on those deee-lish candy pumpkins. I got them on Friday and the bag is empty as of 12:01 this afternoon.

† Confession: I'm the nerd who watches the live runway shows with a pen and a few note cards. I was so ensconced in what was unfolding on my computer screen I only wrote down adjectives. Apparently nouns and verbs didn't make the cut.

pic 1: BCBG- A lot of carry-over from last season. Including clever color-blocking and light silk. Familiar. Classic. Timeless.
pic 2-4: Doo Ri- My goodness, the leather vest...and the bright hues and the beautiful silhouettes...
pic 5: Gary Graham- Flimsy, free, layer on top of later. And that vintage-y coat! Sweetest of the sweet. I swoon.
pic 6: Jason Wu- Surprisingly edgy. Sexy. Feminine.
pic 7: Kevork Kiledjian- Interesting use of color. Really reminds me of spring; i.e the use of olive leather plus the pretty floral blouse. Spring, non?
pic 8-9: Luca Luca- Lime green was all over the runway this season but I especially loved their take.
pic 10-12: Nicholas K- Epitome of spring for me. Lots of flow-y layers, soft colors (a great khaki!) and gorgeous detailing. They made me see white in a whole new light. Check out the platforms!

unpleasant tactile experiences

† I've been having these insane episodes of free-floating anxiety lately. Like, out of the blue, my heart will twitch so hard you can actually see my chest move. It's truly perplexing.

† In other news, it rained for almost a week straight; my entire world was constantly flooded and I'm 100% certain I wasn't dry for the entire duration. Being constantly uncomfortable makes one strangely aware of how animals must feel as they don't have the choice to curl up on a comfortable couch in front of Netflix with a delicious cup of tea.

† I met the loveliest lady on the bus ride home yesterday. Her name was Marge, she had 2 hip replacements and spoke with the quaintest Boston accent (that I couldn't help but attempt to replicate later that evening). And was (and still is) one of the most impeccably dressed women I've seen in a while. I can only hope to be that immaculate when I'm 50/60-something.

I read over 3000 blog entries the other day and I may have only commented on a dozen. Color me jaded, but the trends/themes were so monotonous and repetitive I almost gagged. Please, for the love of Individuality, stop copying one another. So, while I will still be reading and commenting on all of your blogs (my favorite part), the posts on this particular blog may be a little lighter than usual. † These are the last of the shoddy photos, I promise! For my birthday I treated myself to a slight shopping spree at Sephora and Forever 21 (I think I may have tweeted about it). I bought some refills/supplies from Sephora while, from Forever 21, I scored the sweet faux-suede lace up shorts and the purple knit vest shown here. I also nabbed a thick white cardigan (Fall is coming...well, eventually) on sale from $8. I hate the buttons, though, but for $8 it was difficult to resist. I see myself changing the buttons out at a later date...maybe to something wooden.

† I have a bunch of birthday dinners to catch up on, maybe some laying about in the sun (if the thunderstorms ever dissipate), comments to leave, and I started to watch The Wire starting from season 1 so off I go!

† Well, first and foremost, happy belated birthday to my blog and I. Last Wednesday I had a red velvet cupcake and wore this gorgeous vintage sheer skirt I fought for on eBay. I can't even begin to describe the looks I received all night but my desire to wear something floaty and princess-like prevailed so off I went into the night drinking rum and people-watching.

† I haven't quite yet found the perfect spot in my apartment to photograph outfits but I do know that this room definitely isn't it. Something about white lights bouncing off of white walls just doesn't work, I suppose, as they all came out overexposed and grainy. Ah well, live and learn. Better pictures to come!

it's not foolish to be unlucky

† Moving sucks. It's been close to, or over, 100 degrees and yours truly is basically performing bikram yoga whilst lugging loads from upstairs to downstairs to car and then from car to new apartment. Dyyying. Plus my closet is a mess (I like color-coding and it's the farthest from it) and my shoes are in a disarray. Wah.

† I suppose I should have clarified in the previous post: I'm not 40, I'm 30. Actually I'm 29, but I've been saying I'm 30 years old since I was 25 so, mathematically, I guess I'm really 35? Anyway! The conversation the Wacky Lady and I were having was about her former sister-in-law, who is a gorgeous 40-something woman and still rocks the leather pants. Love it. I think the main reason behind Wacky Lady being so judgmental has something to do with a bit of envy mixed with her own personal insecurities about aging. So unfortunate. Aging isn't a curse, it's an adventure! We shouldn't spend the best years of our life passing irrevocable judgments on others. One day she will be 40 and I highly doubt she would take the same comments lightly. Either way, I apologize for the mix up!

† I wish I knew how to sew. I can only cross stitch (thank you grandmother!) and sew a button on straight. If I could sew, I would take the sleeves of this dress up a tad...I also think a bit of ruching would be cute. In it's current state the sleeves are longer than my ideal and stick straight out so I pinned them awkwardly and that was that. The dress was perfect for an entire day of antique hunting in 100 degree heat while sitting on every single couch possible (as the Mister & I currently don't have one) in about 4 different furniture stores. Furniture is expensive. <-- Understatement of the year.
